President-Elect Log Q1 (June – August 2016)

Many of you have seen Candice’s President’s Log in the weekly e-blast about what she’s focused on for that week or something interesting that is happening in the League. I have decided on a more modest goal, a quarterly blog post about the role of President-Elect. I hope this regular post will give you some more insight into the role of President-Elect and answer the question, ‘What exactly does the President-Elect do?’

June: 

Leadership Retreat – Retreat planning begins in the Winter. The content and messages are owned by the President but the President-Elect also attends the planning meetings, collaborates on messages and content, and assists with the operational aspects of the program. This year, after hearing feedback from committees that they wanted more direction from leadership, Candice and I developed annual plans for every committee and included metrics for committees tied to our new Strategic Plan.

CityClub Luncheon – JLS members had a key role in the formation of the Seattle CityClub (link to their website). Every year, we host a table at their fundraising event including JLS Board Members, Managers, staff and key committee leaders.

Annual Campaign Donor Event – For the past several years, we’ve hosted an event for people who donate over $100 to our Annual Campaign. It’s a nice way to say thank you to those members and non-members that have supported us and a great way to connect with Active and Sustainer members.

Sustainer Cocktail Party – Our Sustainer members host an annual cocktail party. I had a great time connecting with Past Presidents and meeting Sustainers. I always learn something new about the League when I attend a Sustainer event.

I also spent time this month meeting with Managers. We were able to get to know each other better and talk about goals for the year.

July :

Management Council – The JLS Management Council is made up of the wing managers, Treasurer-Elect, Sustainer Manager and Management Council Secretary and is responsible for overseeing day to day operations of the League. We spend time reviewing information submitted by Committee chairs/ vice chairs from the Leadership Reporting Form, addressing issues that affect individual committees or the entire League. Management Council meets year round and meetings are open for members to attend through our Pathway to Boards program. You can register to attend through the JLS website.

In July, Managers had a chance to provide feedback on a draft version of the strategic plan.

Provisional Retreat – I attended my first JLS Provisional Retreat and it was awesome! As a transfer, I completed my Provisional year at another League so I loved having an opportunity to see how the JLS welcomes our newest members. I presented a brief history of JLS, got a chance to meet new members and even caught a few Pokémon.

Bellevue Art Museum (BAM) Kids Fair – Completed my first service shift of the year! We’ve partnered with BAM to do our Northwest Art Program for the last several years. They are a great partner and this is a super fun art-tastic event. I enjoyed working with both Active and Provisional members.

I spent some time visiting wing meetings so that I could meet more members and address any questions or concerns that Managers and Chairs may have.

August:

Transfer Social – Did you know that the Membership Committee assigns two Active Advisors to welcome/support members that transfer to our League? Women that transfer to the JLS bring a wealth of experience and great ideas from other Leagues. (I’m not just saying that because I’m a transfer, I swear!)

Board Meeting – The Board of Directors also meets monthly and is focused on the strategic direction of the League. As the President-Elect, I get to attend both the Management Council and Board Meeting. I got to run the August Board meeting as Candice was out of town. Like Management Council meetings, Board meetings are open for members to attend through our Pathway to Boards program. You can register to attend through the website.

Premier Event Meeting – Candice and I meet monthly with Kate Gonsalves (Premier Event Chair), Ali Gilson (Fundraising Events Manager), and Minda Brusse (Director at Large, Raise the Paddle Board Project). The Premier Event is our largest fundraiser and there are some great things already planned for the February 2017 event.

JLS 100th Anniversary Ad Hoc Committee Meeting – There has been an ad hoc committee made up of Actives and Sustainers that has been meeting during the past two years to begin planning for our 100th anniversary. This ad hoc committee is scheduled to become a regular committee in 2017-2018 (my presidential year).

WHEW!!That was a lot more than I thought I had to talk about. Maybe this should be a monthly post…I’ll think about it.

Before, I close I just want to point out a couple of things that are not in this post. I have not included details about answering JLS emails and phone calls but rest assured that those things are happening.

In fact, Candice and I have a weekly call (and usually lots of text messages) to touch base and keep each other informed.

2014 JLS Premier Event After Party: A Little After Party Never Hurt Nobody!

Keep the red carpet glamour and couture rolling into the night after Premier Event with A Little After Party Never Hurt Nobody!   The vintage Hollywood entertainment will continue with dancing, cocktails, a DJ and a photo booth to capture all your special moments.  It is sure to be the perfect place to celebrate the success of Lights, Camera, Action! with your family and friends and a great way to end the evening.

The event will be held on Saturday, February 22nd from 10:00pm to midnight at the historic and luxurious Fairmont Olympic Hotel Garden Room in downtown Seattle.   Tickets are now on sale and can be purchased by visiting the JLS Events page; tickets are $25 for gala attendees and $30 for non-gala attendees.

This event provides a fabulous opportunity for JLS members and supporters to directly have an impact in our community. Proceeds from Premier Event and the After Party will enable the JLS to continue to support important community programs with partners that provide arts and creative thinking, activities that promote health and wellness, combat childhood obesity and prepare women and children to thrive in society.

2014 JLS Premier Event: LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!

The Junior League of Seattle will soon be rolling out the red carpet and celebrating its 90th year in vintage Hollywood style with the Premier Event of Lights, Camera, Action!  Be transported to the golden age of Hollywood for the League’s marquee fundraising and social event of the year as you enjoy delicious cocktails, wonderful food, silent and live auction items and plenty of fun with your friends and family!

EVENT DETAILS

The event will be held on Saturday, February 22nd at the historic and luxurious Fairmont Olympic Hotel in downtown Seattle.  Prepare to doll up in your favorite vintage Hollywood couture as you help the JLS reach the event fundraising goal of $165,000.  Proceeds from Premier Event will enable the JLS to continue to support important community programs with partners such as Seattle Children’s Home, Seattle Public Schools, Treehouse, Boys and Girls Clubs of King County, Childhaven and many more.

Buy your tickets by January 14th to take advantage of preferred pricing.  The event is currently 80% sold out; we are well on our way to welcoming 390 attendees this year.   Tickets are available on the JLS website.  Classic tickets are $175 and include a three-course meal and accompanying wine fit for a vintage celebrity star, check-in/check-out and two hosted bars. VIP tickets are $250 (VIP tables are $2,500) and include elevated meal and wine pairings, dedicated VIP check-in/check-out, dedicated VIP hosted bar, overnight auction item storage and next day delivery (within a 15-mile radius of downtown Seattle), special event recognition and theme-inspired VIP accessories.

The fun will continue into the night at the Premier Event After-Party where you can continue to rock your vintage look.  The After-Party will directly follow the Premier Event and will also be held at Fairmont.  Details and ticket information will be available soon.

The Wall of Wine is a perennial Premier Event favorite and provides auction attendees an exciting way to build their wine cellar.  You can contribute to the WOW at the January GM on the 21st and take advantage of a convenient way to make progress toward your annual fundraising credit obligation (1 credit will be given per $25 value) and a great way to share your favorite wine with an appreciative audience.

Premier Event Updates – Donate to our Raise the Paddle Drive

RAISE THE PADDLE

Since 1923, the Junior League of Seattle has been making an important impact in the Seattle community. The Junior League of Seattle successfully meets the emerging needs of the community by initiating critically important programs and providing trained volunteers to manage them. Your donation to Raise The Paddle will help support the Junior League of Seattle and its community projects in many significant ways, for example:

  •  Provide weekly art projects for children suffering from severe mental and personality disorders and clinical depression through the Healthy Futures Art Project.
  •  Develop critical thinking, build communication skills and inspire creativity through interaction with original works of art through The Northwest Art Project.
  • Mentor teen girls in foster care during a monthly fun yet educational activity through the League’s partnership with Treehouse.
  • Empower our youth to make healthy lifestyle choices through Kids in the Kitchen.

Please Raise Your Paddle high in the air on February 25th to help JLS continue to provide exemplary programs for our community. If you are not able to attend but would like to support the Junior League of Seattle’s community programs, you may donate here.

Monies raised through the 2012 “Raise the Paddle” will be used for the Junior League of Seattle’s community programs/projects, and will be designated between the programs/projects at its discretion.

Join your fellow Junior League Sustainers at our Annual Sustainer Luncheon! This year we are excited to feature Dr. Christina Orr-Cahall, CEO and Director of the EMP and JLS Sustaining member as our guest speaker. She will talk about “Museums: Through a Director’s Looking Glass”, exploring the changing dynamics in museums and their role in the community through the perspective of a 30-year veteran museum director. It includes the sharing of powerful, often funny and even occasionally sinister experiences.

Dr. Christina Orr-Cahall began as CEO and Director of the EMP in July 2009. From 1990—2009 she was the CEO and Director of the Norton Museum of Art, West Palm Beach, FL. Previously she was Director and President, Corcoran Gallery and College of Art; Chief Curator of Art, The Oakland Museum and Special Assistant to the Dean of Arts and Humanities, Faculty Member, Art History and Director of University Gallery, California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo.
