How to Make Time for Healthy Eating

The Junior League of Seattle understands how hard it is for us all of us to maintain healthy eating habits. It is especially hard for busy, working moms! We strive to encourage healthy eating habits and realize that with those healthy habits come serious planning and time management. We all know that healthy parents that teach their kids good, healthy habits are setting them up for successful futures. Here are a few tips for making sure that healthy eating is a priority in your family.

1) Make an actual appointment in your weekly schedule for meal planning and grocery shopping. Sitting down and planning the week’s meals will save time at the grocery store and in the kitchen.

2) Encourage your whole family to help out. Kids can help pack lunches and snacks. Teach them how to divide snacks into individual portions. You will get some help in the kitchen and they will learn more about portion control and proper planning. While you are at it, get your kids to help with the menu planning, then you won’t have to fight them so much when you prepare a meal they are sure to love!

3) Stock up on the basics. Make sure you have all the healthy basics on hand (including healthy snacks.) That way, when you have to plan something in a hurry, everything you need is already there.

4) Use smaller plates and containers. Bento boxes work great for kids lunches. When you are in a rush, no one wants to bother with measuring portion sizes, but if the dishes are already sized accordingly, you won’t need to worry about measuring.
