During a packed General Meeting at Nordstrom’s flagship store on Sunday, December 4, the Junior League of Seattle’s Nominating Committee was thrilled to announce that Rebecca Wilson is our new President Elect Nominee.
Rebecca’s experience spans diverse roles within and outside of the Junior League of Seattle. Outside of the League, she has been actively involved in the University Family YMCA, serving on their Board of Directors and leading their annual campaign. She has also served on the Board of the Ruby Room and been involved in Seattle Works. Within the Junior League of Seattle her broad experience has been felt in areas such as Project Development, Lifebooks, and Fundraising Manager. She is currently serving on the Junior League of Seattle on our Board of Directors.
Professionally, Rebecca is the Dean of Students at Forest Ridge School for the past five years. She serves on the Diversity Committee and was instrumental in creating a Women in Leadership Speaker series for students and faculty alike. A 2010 graduate of Leadership Tomorrow, Rebecca’s community involvement has and will continue to focus on youth development, education and healthy living.

Done-In-A-Day has offered some wonderful shifts through the month of November. On November 12, Junior League of Seattle members volunteered at Amara’s National Adoption Day Celebration. Our members were able to interact with children (ages 1- 11) doing arts and crafts projects, face painting, and set-up for the party. Over 100 parents, children and board members participated in this fun and successful event.
Amara works to transform the lives of vulnerable children who deserve safe, stable homes to thrive. This is a celebration of successful placements. Amara is an independent, nonprofit organization in the State of Washington that has been providing services to families and children since 1921. Throughout their history they have developed pioneering programs to meet the changing needs of our community’s children, youth, and families. Amara’s mission is to create and support stable, loving homes for vulnerable children. Their vision and wish for the future is “A Home for Every Child.” Amara’s aim to transfer the lives of vulnerable children by helping provide them with safe, stable homes fits into JLS’ focus area of Disenfranchised Youth.
Our Amara service shift was managed by Kate Chiarella and Allie Okner.
Christmas is right around the corner and the YWCA has 30 families who have yet to be paired with a sponsor for the Adopt-A-Family program. It would be great if we could Junior League of Seattle members (and their friends, family and co-workers!) to see if we can come up with a few more sponsors for the YWCA.
Groups who can lend a hand will work directly with our contact at the YWCA, Nichelle Hilton.
To sign up: Please send your request to sponsor a family directly to Nichelle Hilton at the YWCA at email@example.com by end-of-day Monday, December 12th. In this e-mail please state if you would like to sponsor a small family (1-2 children) or a large family (3-5 children.) The YWCA recommeds 2 gifts per child, each in the $25 range, and one $15 gift card for each adult in the family (e.g. for a family of 2 children and 1 parent, your group can expect to spend approx $115 total.) Details: All members are welcome to stop by for an informal conversation with our Leadership to discuss the motions proposed for the January Voting Meeting. These motions include the proposed membership dues increase, the proposal to restructure our organizational structure, and the proposal to sun-set the LifeBooks committee. If you have questions or comments about these motions that you were not able to voice at the Unit meetings or otherwise, please use this opportunity to come and discuss those with JLS Leadership. This is your chance to be heard before the vote!

Christmas time usually brings smiles to children’s faces. Sadly, many children throughout the Seattle area will go without something to open during the holiday season.
In 2010, YWCA of Seattle helped over 60,000 women and children throughout King and Snohomish counties. The need is even greater in 2011, and the Done-in-a-Day Committee is asking its generous Junior League of Seattle members and friends to give the gift of holiday cheer to many children in need this holiday season.
We are collecting donations of new toys, gift cards, movies, books, board games, and new clothing items geared towards kids from infant to teen ages. Done-in-a-Day will match all donations- so if you donate, your efforts will be doubled!
The Junior League Done-in-a-Day Committee will be collecting unwrapped new toys this December. Items can be dropped off at the Junior League General Meeting on December 4th at Nordstrom or at the League office. All donations must be collected by Monday, December 12th.
